Operational Environmental Services
Client: Kellogg
Country: Queretaro, Mexico
Role: Operational Environmental Services
Purpose: Genermasa has been working with Kellogg for nearly 10 years, assisting them to fulfill their environmental objectives.
Genermasa has performed numerous environmental studies for the Kellogg facilities in Mexico (Queretaro plant) including environmental impact assessments, environmental risk assessments, development of accident prevention programs, and annual operational registers. All projects have been developed in consideration of the national law requirements as well as international standard practices. Additionally Kellogg has voluntarily enrolled in an Environmental Audit Program promoted by the Environmental Protection Federal Agency in Mexico; this program included an comprehensive evaluation of ten different environmental impact areas, including: air, water, soil, environmental risk, hazardous and non-hazardous wastes, noise and environmental management system. Kellogg enrolled in the program in December 1999 when it was first audited by Genermasa; after the audit an action plan was issued to remedy the non-compliances identified. Kellogg worked hard to fulfill the action plan and was delighted to achieve a "Clean Industry" certificate, issued by the authority in July 2001.
In order to conduct these audits, Genermasa became accredited as a Verification Unit issued by the Mexican Accreditation Entity and approved by the Environmental Protection Federal Agency. Genermasa has the 2nd accreditation issued at national level and has developed hundreds of audits for different types of organisations including industries (food, beverage, pharmaceutical, metal mechanical, etc.), petroleum facilities, municipal entities, hospitals, hotels and others. The "Clean Industry" certificate has 2 years validity and after this term an environmental diagnosis must be conducted again by an accredited verification unit. In 2003 Kellogg hired Genermasa again to conduct the diagnosis and achieved the renewal of the certificate again in 2004. This process has been conducted every 2 years since, and because of the hard work of the Kellogg EHS personnel along with Genermasa's consultancy, Kellogg (Queretaro plant) currently is in the process to obtain their fourth consecutive certificate renewal.
Outcome / Client Benefits:
Due to the outstanding environmental performance that Kellogg (Queretaro plant) has demonstrated in the past 10 years. Kellogg will be receiving the "Environmental Excellence" Certificate, in January 2010, which is awarded to only a few industries in Mexico.
